Three years after the launch of Immunity+ sires, dairymen worldwide are reaping the benefits of Semex’s exclusive technology.

Developed by Dr. Bonnie Mallard and her colleagues at the University of Guelph, the research surrounding the HIR (High Immune Response) technology that Immunity+ is based on spans decades, includes over 100 published papers and is 30% heritable.

“No other product or solution available has this, or is 30% heritable with immediate effects… This starts at birth, there’s no wait,” says Paul Krueger, Semex Immunity+ Global Brand Manager. “We hear every day how dairymen are benefitting from this technology.”

“When Semex asked me to start tracking our calf care and treatments, those calves that didn’t get sick were always Immunity+ calves,” comments Nate Bennet, Herdsman at Schwab Dairy Farm, a 1,000-cow dairy in Delevan, NY. “During the winter, our heifer pens in the pack barn can be up to 50% overcrowded. In the last year, we’ve only treated three heifers for pneumonia, a huge decrease from years past.”

Semex is pleased to announce that Steven Larmer will join its team as Global Dairy Solutions Coordinator effective October 26.

Reporting to Jay Shannon, Director, Global Marketing & Dairy Solutions, Steven will be a key contributor to ongoing sales tools and genetic solutions development, a technical lead of our exclusive Immunity+™ technology, contribute to our global genetic education program and work closely with our Product Development and Research Teams.

Steven is no stranger to the dairy industry from his involvement in his family farm, Vintage Land and Cattle Ltd in Ontario. Following his passion in his educational studies, Steven attended the University of Guelph completing his BSc in animal biology and his MSc in animal science. As his interest in research and genetics advanced, Steven is now in the final stage of completing his PhD in Animal Science, with a focus on dairy cattle breeding and genomics. 

“We are delighted to have Steven join our Semex team,” said Shannon. “He is a very talented individual who combines practical farm and industry experience with an extensive knowledge in genetics and genomics. Nearly 900 US dairymen from coast to coast entered in Semex’s #takehomebrenda draw for a high GTPI Immunity+ sired daughter while at World Dairy Expo (WDE). Sired by 0200HO06639 Stantons Pulsar, give-away calf Pulsar Brenda is +2569 GTPI, ranking her in the top 1% of the breed.

Dean Meinholz of Blue Star Dairy Farms, DeForest, Wisconsin is the winner of Pulsar Brenda. Blue Star Dairy is home to 2500 cows on three locations, has over 4000 acres of land and averages over 90 lbs milk/cow/day. Family owned and operated for several generations, is a family partnership on three locations north of Madison, Wisconsin. The original dairy in Middleton milks 470 cows and raises its own replacement heifers. The DeForest farm milks 800 cows and the Arlington farm milks 1200 cows. As the only company offering immune genetics for greater disease resistance, Semex is excited to announce that dairymen everywhere can feel even more confident in Immunity+™ as recent studies show heritability to be 30%. “This is huge,” says Paul Krueger, Immunity+ Global Brand Manager and Director, Sales and Business Development, United States. “Our clients worldwide have been looking for a simple, genetic answer to herd health and Immunity+ is it! It’s got 20 years of research behind it, over 100 published papers and is proven to reduce disease incidence by at least 4-8%. With heritability estimated at 30% it’s one of the easiest decisions you can make to improve the health of your entire herd.” The original immune response research, based on a population of females tested for immune response, estimated heritabilities of 29% for Antibody-Mediated Immune Response (AMIR), 19% for Cell-Mediated Immune Response (CMIR) and 25% for overall Immune Response. Over the past 12 months, there have been two separate genome association studies conducted where as part of each study, the heritabilities for AMIR and CMIR were reestimated. The first study published one year ago was based on a moderate population size including only males tested for immune response, and the latest study just completed was based on a much larger group of both males and females. The two studies showed very similar heritabilities of 46% and 44% for AMIR, and both had a matching heritability of 22% for CMIR. The three research studies were combined to calculate the new 30% heritability figure for overall immune response.
